SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno named John Barbieri as the next Springfield Police Commissioner at Springfield City Hall Tuesday morning.

Police Commissioner William Fitchet will retire May 31. He has been with the department for nearly 40 years and was acting commissioner until he was sworn in as full-time in 2008.

There were three candidates in the running to be the next police commissioner. Mayor Sarno said he has a "five-point plan" with time lines, and there will be a public presentation of their plan in the near future.

"Commissioner John Barbieri is a progressive and innovative leader who has the command and respect of the department. More importantly he understands and respects the mosaic and fabric of the people of Springfield," Mayor Sarno stated in a news release to CBS 3. "I have worked very closely with Commissioner Barbieri; whether it's been in dealing with combating urban crime or natural and/or man-made disasters. His command presence is more than evident but more importantly his empathy to understand the good and the bad of the human spirit has led him to diffuse situations in a mutually less confrontational way."

Barbieri joined the Springfield Police Department in 1988 after graduating first in his academy class. He was appointed deputy chief in May of 2009 and holds a master's degree in criminal justice from Western New England University.

"I am humbled and honored to have Mayor Sarno's confidence. I am excited for the opportunity to implement a public safety plan that reflects the Mayor's vision for the city of Springfield. I look forward to working with some of the best officers in the country as well as the residents, businesses and clergy of our great city," Barbieri stated.

Barbieri is a resident of Springfield.
