Amherst Select Board shoots down minimum wage hike proposal

AMHERST, MA (WSHM) -

The Amherst Select Board voted Monday night to not recommend the town council increase the minimum wage for town employees.

A petitioner asked to increase the town's minimum wage to $15 an hour, nearly doubling the state's current minimum wage.

While many people support an increase in minimum wage, officials say just raising wages in town may hurt Amherst.

The town's finance director says businesses and schools will lose employees and the change would add $224,000 to its budget.

The petitioner did not show up for Monday night's meeting.

The town council will meet on Wednesday.
