TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A new report shows the amount of far-right extremists fell significantly in 2013 for the first time in a decade, but remains at near-record levels.

The Southern Poverty Law Center's "Intelligence Report" released today reveals a large number of extremist or "hate groups" exist, including neo-Nazis, white nationalists, neo-Confederates, racist skinheads, Klansmen and black separatists. Other hate groups on the list target LGBT people, Muslims or illegal immigrants, and some specialize in producing racist music or propaganda denying the Holocaust.

See a state-by-state list of hate groups and an interactive map here. There are 20 groups listed in Arizona, including two in Tucson, according to the map.

The publication notes that the "hate groups" were determined by police reports, hate group publications and websites, among other factors that showed the groups were active. The listed groups did not necessarily get violent or commit crime, according to the Hate Map. It says group activities can include "criminal acts, marches, rallies, speeches, meetings, leafleting or publishing."

"The radical right is growing leaner and meaner," senior fellow at the SPLC and editor of the report, Mark Potok, stated in a news release. "The numbers are down somewhat, but the potential for violence remains high."

In its annual count, the SPLC found that the number of hate groups across the country dropped by seven percent, from 1,007 in 2012 to 939 in 2013. Hate groups reached a peak in 2011 with 1,018 groups, the release said.

The number in Arizona has been steady, compared to a report from 2010.
