State Police: 185 heroin deaths reported in Mass since November

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

In a statement released Tuesday, Massachusetts State Police spokesman David Procopio said nearly 200 deaths in the past three months in the state are contributed to heroin.

Since Nov. 1, 185 people have died from heroin overdoses.

Procopio said 31 of those deaths happened in Western Mass, with 12 in Hampden County and 19 in Hampshire and Franklin counties.

Excluded from the release were Springfield, Worcester and Boston. In those three cities, local police handle their own death investigations.

Procopio said he believes the rise in heroin abuse is attributed to the availability of the drug, making it easier for users to obtain than other opiates or prescription narcotics.
