(CNN) - Jason Collins will be the NBA's first active openly gay player.
The Brooklyn Nets signed the free agent center to a 10-day contract on Sunday.
Collins is available to play in Sunday night's game against the Lakers in Los Angeles.
The 35-year-old has played 12 NBA seasons, including his first seven with the Nets.
Collins revealed he is gay at the end of last season, but he was a free agent and had remained unsigned.
