SARASOTA, FL (WFLA) -

A Sarasota man is behind bars after his girlfriend told Sarasota Police officers he poured hot sauce all over a 3-month old puppy named Gizmo.

At about 1:20 a.m. Sunday morning, officers responded to the 3500 block of Old Bradenton Road in reference animal cruelty. When officers arrived, they met with the homeowner who told them her boyfriend, Ephrian Myles, 47, of 1511 31st Street, Sarasota, poured hot sauce all over her 3-month old Dachshund/Chihuahua mix, Gizmo.

The homeowner told officers Gizmo has a medical history of seizures. The puppy suffered a seizure and started making a yelping noise. According to the homeowner, Myles became annoyed with the yelping, grabbed Gizmo and opened a bottle of hot sauce and began to pour it all over Gizmo. The hot sauce covered the puppy's whole body, got into his eyes and down his throat.

The homeowner took the puppy and went to a nearby fire department to get help. When officers found the puppy, they observed the puppy's eyes swelled shut and that he was having difficulty breathing. The puppy went limp in the presence of the officers. Officer Jessica Sullivan and Officer Adam Arena immediately started washing off Gizmo with water and a towel. Gizmo was turned over to Animal Services and is expected to make a full recovery.

Officers made contact with Myles and observed a large amount of hot sauce on the floor. Myles told officers he had no idea what was going on and that he had nothing to do with the puppy or the hot sauce.

Myles was placed under arrest and transported to the Sarasota County Jail.

Myles has been charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty.
