SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

An alleged drug dealer was caught with 164 bags of heroin after Springfield police responded to a possible home invasion just before midnight Friday, according to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.

Officers responded to 38 Johnson St. for the reported home invasion, but after checking the residence, police determined that an invasion never occurred, Delaney said.

While responding officers had the home surrounded, they spotted 22-year-old Jean Rivera sneak out the back of the apartment. Rivera, who has no known home address, saw a detective and attempted to elude him, Delaney said.

Rivera, who was carrying a backpack and acting suspiciously, blurted out, "Yo dude, that's my brother's bag," when the detective stopped him, according to Delaney.

At that point, officers began to investigate a possible house break-in. When police searched Rivera's bag, they found 164 bags of heroin, Delaney said.

Rivera, who was on bail for a pending case for possession of heroin with intent to distribute and carrying a firearm, was charged again with possession of heroin with intent to distribute. He was held for the weekend in Springfield lockup and was scheduled to be arraigned in Springfield District Court Tuesday, according to an arrest report.
