A Springfield man was charged with animal cruelty and attempted murder after he allegedly punched a dog's face and body and strangled his roommate, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.
Police responded to a domestic disturbance on Keith Street just before midnight Friday. The victim's roommate arrived home intoxicated and allegedly went upstairs and began to beat the victim's dog, Delaney said.
The victim said he could hear the beating and ran up the stairs to stop the attack on his pet. The roommate, identified as 30-year-old Robert Brown, then turned his aggression towards the victim and began to strangle him, Delaney said.
When officers arrived they attempted to arrest Brown, but he fled down Keith Street. Officers chased him down, and after a brief struggle made an arrest, Delaney said.
Brown was charged with attempted murder, animal cruelty, resisting arrest, assault and battery and disorderly conduct, according to an arrest report.
Brown was held the weekend in Springfield lockup and was scheduled to be arraigned in Springfield District Court Tuesday morning.
