HiVE deployments help reduce collisions in Oro Valley

Posted: Updated:
ORO VALLEY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Oro Valley Police Department has been conducting High Visibility Enforcement (HiVE) patrols since 2012, with the goal of reducing collisions at two busy intersections and it has succeeded at one.

The focus of the patrols are two intersections on Oracle, one at Magee and one at Suffolk; before the HiVE patrols collisions at Oracle and Suffolk were 41 in 2012, and have since gone down to 26 in 2013.  OVPD has stated more work needs to be done at the intersection of Oracle and Magee – collisions in 2012 were 36 and have gone up to 47 in 2013.

The HiVE patrols were created as an education and awareness initiative, which is why OVPD advertises the deployments ahead of time.  The hope is that drivers are aware of stepped up patrols in those areas and drive better.

On average three out of every ten drivers who commit moving violations in these areas are cited.  OVPD has conducted 60 deployments since the start of HiVE, happening about five times a month either in the morning or the evening.
