Annual Lincoln Day Brunch held in Westfield

WESTFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Saturday morning, the Westfield Republican City Committee held its annual Lincoln Day Brunch.

The event serves as a kickoff to the fundraising year and allows residents to hear from people running for public office.

This year, Westfield native Mark Fisher, who is running for governor, as well as Lt. Governor candidate Karyn Polito were on hand, as was Dan Allie, who is running for state representative.

The committee chair told CBS 3 that there is a reason the city has a strong Republican party.

"It's not as political," said Bill Schneeloch. "It's more the people and the issues they stand for. It's not that this guy is on team elephant and this guy is on team donkey, it's 'I support this issue.' It's an issue-driven thing."

The Lincoln Day Brunch has been going on since the 1980s.

As part of the event, they read President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
