SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A would-be car thief knocked two gas pumps out of place at the Main Street BP and Mini Mart after the owner of the car he was stealing put him in a choke hold.

According to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney, 32-year-old Michael Bedinelli jumped in a Ford pickup truck that had its keys in the ignition when the driver was inside the store making a purchase.

When Bedinelli got in the truck and began to drive away, the driver of the truck, who was borrowing the vehicle from his girlfriend, was able to jump in the backseat of the truck and choke Bedinelli, which caused him to step on the gas and crash into the gas pumps, Delaney said.

Springfield police charge Bedinelli with larceny of a motor vehicle, malicious damage over $25 and operating a motor vehicle without a license, Delaney said.
