WORCESTER, MA (WSHM) -

The murder of a Shrewsbury woman with connections to Western Mass has been a mystery for the past 40 years.

On Feb. 22, 1974 Eileen Ferro was murdered in her Shrewsbury home.

The 21-year-old's lifeless body was found by her husband with several stab wounds.

Questions have lingered for her family both in Worcester and in Chicopee as to who killed her.

Until during a press conference held Thursday, when Worcester County District Attorney Tim Connolly named a Georgia man as the suspect.

"The DNA evidence identifies former Worcester resident, Lonzo Guthrie, as the primary suspect," said Connolly.

He said Guthrie, 29 at the time of the murder, delivered furniture to Ferro on Feb. 21.

He allegedly returned to the home the next day and killed her.

Connolly said Guthrie then fled to California where he made a criminal name for himself.

"He was convicted of rape in Los Angeles and agreed to a three to 30 year prison sentence," said Connolly.

After registering as a sex offender and granted probation, Guthrie landed in Georgia where he had another run-in with the law.

"He was arrested for driving without a license. He violated parole. He was brought to L. A. and when he was in L. A., he was required to give a DNA sample,"said Connolly.

Connolly said that DNA sample was entered into a database which connected Guthrie to Ferro's Murder.

"We got a hit based on evidence that we had at the crime scene," he explained.

Connolly said he has no doubt Guthrie is the man who took Eileen's life that February night, four decades ago.

"It was a particularly gruesome murder. We believed he was involved with the murder. We believe he was the murderer," said Connolly.

CBS 3 spoke with Ferro's family Wednesday night. They declined to go on camera, but said the entire ordeal has been emotional for them.

Guthrie was arraigned in Georgia on a fugitive charge and is fighting extradition to Massachusetts to face a murder charge.
