The Massachusetts House Thursday expelled one of its members after his conviction on charges of domestic assault.
The house voted 146 to 5 Thursday afternoon to expel State Rep. Carlos Henriquez of Roxbury, who is serving a six-month jail sentence for assaulting his former girlfriend.
Lawmakers first shot down an amendment to censure Henriquez, rather than expel him.
Henriquez addressed the chamber before Thursday's vote and declared his innocence but left after speaking.
He is the first member to be expelled from the Massachusetts House in nearly a century.
