Snow plowers seeing 'white gold' this winter

EAST LONGMEADOW, MA (WSHM) -

Wednesday's snow storm once again left Western Mass in a blanket of white, leaving residents with the burden of digging out.

But not everyone dislikes having to remove the mounds of snow.

For Matt Scavotto, of East Longmeadow, getting rid of the white stuff is kind of fun.

"I love winter. I love the snow. It's my favorite season," said Scavotto.

Of course it helps when his shovel is a plow.

Scavotto runs his own plowing business, so to him all this white snow is actually white gold.

The more white he sees covering the roads, the green he'll see in his pockets.

"It puts money in my pocket and puts food on the table," said Scavotto.

He has been in the plowing business for the past 20 years, clearing driveways across Western Mass.

"I'm usually in East Longmeadow, Longmeadow, Hampden, Wilbraham, Springfield," explained Scavotto

He uses his truck to not only clear paths for homeowners, but also to make sure things are safe for the public as well.

"With this storm here, you got to make sure all the snow banks are pushed back, sidewalks are open really well and there's no ice on the walkways," said Scavotto.

Scavotto said with the number of storms this year, there is a high demand for snow plowers, which has been great for business.

"A lot of different plow vehicles are out. Everybody has their own thing going," said Scavotto.

It's a job many dread doing, but for Scavotto, it's a job he can't see himself not doing.

"It helps me stay in shape, keeps me healthy and that's what keeps me smiling," said Scavotto.
