SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield Department of Public Works crews worked around the clock spreading salt and plowing the streets Wednesday.

This was the thirteenth snow event of the season and it's only the first week of February.

The snow storm that hit Wester Massachusetts Wednesday cost Springfield's Department of Public Works over $200,000, according to Springfield DPW Director Al Schawlek.

Springfield DPW is well over their budget at this point, but they needed to do what they could to keep the streets safe and clear, Schawlek said.

This storm is putting them over budget, but they will do whatever they can to make sure the streets are safe, he said.

"We're spending a little bit more money on repairs to the plows but we're on top of it, we've got all our trucks, all our equipment, plenty of salt, people get tired of winter but it's what we got to do," Schawlek said.

Springfield DPW had all 176 of its plows on the road Wednesday and they were already getting ready for another storm this weekend.
