SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield police officers were able to wrestle a .44-magnum handgun away from a man who was wanted for leaving a halfway house after he was just released from jail, according to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.

Police also recovered 49 bags of heroin and $129 from the suspect after the arrest was made, Delaney said.

At about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday police received information that the suspect, identified as Martin Fernandez, fled "After Incarceration Support Services" at 736 State St. and that he was carrying a loaded gun, Delaney said.

Fernandez was spotted getting in a red Ford Taurus and detectives as well as members of the ATF Task Force converged on the area. Officers surrounded the vehicle at the intersection of Wilbraham Road and Alden Street, Delaney said.

"As the detectives approached the vehicle they could see Fernandez reaching for the weapon that was tucked inside his pants. The officers wrestled with Fernandez and were able to place him into custody after he spit and kicked at the officers," Delaney said.

Detectives recovered the gun and found that it was stolen during a break-in on Mohegan Avenue in Springfield in November 2012.

Police charged Fernandez, 25, of 25 North Chatham St. with carrying a firearm, possession of a firearm while committing a felony, possession of ammunition, possession of stolen property, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, resisting arrest, and receiving stolen property.

"It appears Mr. Fernandez is having trouble staying out of trouble after his recent incarceration," Delaney said, adding that detectives requested a $50,000 cash bail to keep him off the streets.
