Bad back? Shovel style could help

Posted: Updated:
NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) -

Snow-shoveling injuries could be avoided if the right shovel is used, according to a report.

Consumer Reports magazine said the best shovel to use for the heavy, wet snow dumped by Winter Storm Derby is a lightweight straight-shaft with "D"-shaped handle.

However, the report also said the right shovel is the one that fits the user.

It said lighter weight means easier lifting. For that, a rigid shovel is useful.

For easier throwing, a short handle might be best. For pushing, the report suggested a longer handle.

Owning more than one kind could help avoid injuries, the report said. That way users could tailor the shovel to the storm.

Customers like Julio Esteves in New London said he preferred the long handles.

"Always a longer pole is better," he said. "Better for your back."
