SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The sounds of military precision filled the Springfield Central High School gymnasium on Saturday as the school hosted the league championship drill meet for Junior ROTC.

Ten high schools took part in the event, coming from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York and Rhode Island.

The senior instructor of Central's team told CBS 3 that a lot of work goes into the drills.

"This is all done after school," said Thomas Cleland, a retired colonel from the U.S. Air Force. "We practice every day. We have the longest competitive season of any high school extra-curricular activity. We started in August and we're going to the nationals. We'll end up on the 20th of March at the national competition with 80 schools from around the country."

Saturday's event was the fourth competition of the season, as well as the regional championship event.
