RMV fees may increase by 10 percent

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Massachusetts residents could soon be forced to pay more to renew a driver's license or do other business at the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

State officials will seek to raise registry fees by ten percent on July 1. It's all in an effort to fill a $53 million gap in the State Department of Transportation's operating budget.

Registry fees incurred most often by customers have not increased since 2008, according to the department's chief financial officer.

The registry brings in about $550 million every year. If that grew by 10 percent the department could close the budget gap.
