DURHAM, N.C. -

We use our smart phones for many reasons, but for one blind Durham man, his iPhone is now a part of his life in a way he never thought possible.

John Miller is 34 years old and was born with a genetic disorder that causes blindness. "It's what I've always known" he explained.

He said as difficult as it is not to see, he still finds a way to get by. But now thanks to a new app called TapTapSee, he has a new set of eyes.

"I can do everything with this iPhone now," Miller said. "I can get on the bus, it will tell me what the restaurant is, or what stop I can get off at. It really brings the whole world to life for me."

So here's how it works: You take a picture and seconds later it tells you what the object is.

"One of the nice things about it is I can take a picture of money so when I go to the cash register, I don't have to worry about possibly being ripped off anymore," Miller said.

Miller said it has changed his life by giving him more independence, making it easier to do the day to day things we all take for granted. "It's like I have my own eyes."

The app itself is free but requires a paid subscription for the pictures.
