Sen. Elizabeth Warren stops in Springfield

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren came to Springfield Wednesday morning to discuss with the public some issues she will be addressing this year.

Warren says she's worked on a lot in Washington this past year and is now specifically focusing on several issues.

The senator says she has introduced a bill on holding down the cost of college by making sure the federal government uses its leverage to do so, as well as refinance the student loan debt and taking the first step to help out former students.

"We got to take kids that are out there paying 7 percent interest or more and bring them down to today's rates. That at least gives them a shot to begin paying off this debt," Warren said.

She made her way to UMass Wednesday afternoon to speak to students about this issue. She also spoke at Baystate Medical Center to talk about medical research.

"We are on the threshold of powerfully important discoveries in Alzheimer, autism, diabetes. These are critical issues facing our country. We need our medical research scientists out there working on these. This is our chance for the future, it's very personal but it's also powerfully important for this whole country," she said.

Specific to Western Massachusetts, Warren says she has co-sponsored a bill that will suspend the new flood maps from going into effect.

"We're very concerned that they're not based on good science and that the studies that have supposed to been done are not done, so I'm hopeful that we're going to get this bill through, and if we do, it's going to give us a little time to come back to this problem," she said.

Warren also gave her opinion on the MGM casino proposal.

"The No. 1 thing for me is that the local towns really get a big say in this, really has to be up to the residents who are going to be most directly impacted."
