SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

There's developing news on the casino front.

A Springfield-based casino may be more likely than expected.

Chairman of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission Stephen Crosby sat down one-on-one with CBS 3 Tuesday to discuss MGM's future in Springfield.

Crosby acknowledged the gaming company has passed their background checks, submitted their applications and will hold their final presentation on Thursday.

When asked what could stand in the way from MGM getting the Western Mass casino license, Crosby said he can't see anything that would.

"To be honest, I think it's not very likely that they would be stopped," said Crosby.

He continued to say the gaming commission will still look into certain factors of MGM's plan including if they haven't addressed some traffic issues, or they need to relate to the local tourism industry better.

"We have the ability to negotiate with them," said Crosby.

The chairman said after everything is all said and done, the outlook for a Springfield-based casino is positive.

"Probably we will go forward with them. Although, that's not certain. I'm only one commissioner, there are five of us. But you can be sure it will be done with an eye to maximized it all with the criteria we are looking for," explained Crosby.
