Winter storm threatens Western Massachusetts

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield has issued a parking ban and several school closings and early dismissals have already occurred. Take a look at our full list of closings and delays here.

"The snow will pick up around dinner time and last until about 6 .a.m. The good thing is that it's not a long duration storm," said CBS 3 Springfield Meteorologist Nick Morganelli.

Snow covered roadways will cause hazardous driving conditions and periods of heavy snow with strong wind gusts will cause visibility to be less than one mile.

"The snow that falls tonight will stick around for the whole week. Local ski areas will get some help with this, but it's a southern New England storm. South of Interstate 84 in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Cape Cod will get worst of the storm," Morganelli said.

Expect 15 mph winds with gusts up to 30 mph that will drop the wind chill to minus 20 degrees at times. A wind chill advisory will remain in effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The Springfield parking ban will be in effect from 7 p.m. Tuesday until further notice. Parking is prohibited on the even side of the street from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. and on the odd side of the street and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Department of Transportation has begun to pre-treat highways in the area to reduce the slippery conditions.
