Edward Sullivan sworn in as West Springfield Mayor

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

West Springfield's new Mayor Edward Sullivan was sworn in at a ceremony at the high school Monday night.

He beat out incumbent Mayor Greg Neffinger for the job last November.

He says his top priorities now are transparency in city government and increasing public safety.

The town is also working to get named as a surrounding community to MGM's Springfield casino proposal.

"We believe we're impacted and to not be designated as a surrounding community is a little baffling. It just forces us to spend more time and more resources to receive that designation," Sullivan said before being sworn in.

Sullivan says they plan on filing a petition to the gaming commission by the end of the week to get designated as a surrounding community.
