FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -

A speeding Jeep led a Pinal County Sheriff's deputy to more than 200 pounds of marijuana jammed inside, one arrest and one escapee Sunday.

A Pinal County Sheriff's Office spokesman said the deputy clocked the Jeep doing 90 mph in a 55-mph zone on Arizona Highway 84 near Casa Grande about 7:30 a.m.

The driver slowed the vehicle for a short distance but accelerated as it turned north on State Route 347 before abruptly stopping, the spokesman said.

A man in camouflage clothing jumped from the passenger door and ran into the desert while the driver, later identified as Alejandro Ruiz of Phoenix, was questioned by the deputy, the spokesman said.

Ruiz, 22, was asked if anything was illegal in the Jeep and replied there was "some marijuana," the spokesman said.

The deputy said he saw several bundles of marijuana inside the Jeep. They weighed 212 pounds with a street value of $159,000, the spokesman said.

Ruiz was booked into the Pinal County Jail for transportation of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale and possession of marijuana, the spokesman said.

The passenger escaped into the desert, the spokesman said.
