(WMC-TV) - A baby was found in a freezing cold truck alone while the father was inside a Walmart allegedly shoplifting.
Dyersburg police say Stetson Swift, 20, was arrested and charged with leaving his 8-month-old child in a truck while he went inside Walmart to shoplift.
"People like that shouldn't even have children. That's just ridiculous. You don't even take an animal out in this weather let alone a child," said shopper James Schroeder.
Police say Swift was stopped by security before he left the store. He revealed to them that he left the child in the truck.
They say the baby was not restrained, and the window of the vehicle was also rolled down.
Some people tried to find a reason behind Swift's actions.
"Maybe his baby was hungry," said shopper Blan Stout. "I don't know what I'd do if my baby was hungry. So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt."
But police say Swift stole general merchandise including nothing that would help his child.
"Otherwise if it was something that was not edible I think he deserves just punishment ... Get what's coming to him," said Stout.
Police say Walmart did not file shoplifting charges because the merchandise was valued at under $25 dollars. Swift is charged with felony child abuse and neglect to a child.
He was placed under a $15,000 bond.
