Adim Malek began his American dream in 2011, coming to America from South Sudan. It was the same year his country gained their independence.
Now, only two years after that historic election, his home country is on the brink of civil war.
The United Nations is reporting that some 45,000 people have been forced to flee from their homes because of the violence and are crowding into shelters.
Malek says his family remains in the country and he worries about them constantly, especially this Christmas.
Fighting began mid-December after current President Salva Kiir accused the former vice president of trying to overthrow his government.
The UN says the fighting has escalated from a political problem to fighting between the different ethnicities in the country.
U.S. diplomats including Secretary of State John Kerry are calling for peace in the country.
Malek says he wants to return there next year to start a nonprofit in the hopes of building more schools and clinics there.
