HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The woman police believe drowned her 8-year-old son and then killed herself, was previously arrested for stabbing a hospital nurse in September, according to court documents.

Police said 42-year-old Delicia Latrice Barrow was pronounced dead after authorities found her inside her burning home on Alburta Drive in Huntsville, on Saturday.

On Sunday, deputies found the body of Barrow's autistic son, Randle Barrow, in the Tennessee River in the Honeycomb area of Marshall County. Investigators believe Barrow drowned Randle and then returned home where she killed herself.

Court documents state the Barrow was previously arrested in October after stabbing a hospital nurse, and charged with second-degree assault. A preliminary hearing for the case was scheduled for Jan. 9. Her attorney said she never should have been charged in the case, citing that she was under the influence of medication administered at the hospital.

In addition, Delicia had a record with the Department of Human Services. The DHR released a record of when they have had to intervene with regard to the mother and child.

In September 2009, a relative called for a welfare check on Randle. No risk or harm to the child could be confirmed.

On Wednesday, Dec. 11, DHR was contacted by the child's school to report they observed the mother struggling physically and having slurred speech. DHR tried contacting Barrow at the house and could not reach her.

Madison County Coroner Craig Whisenant said Monday that autopsies confirmed Randle's death was a homicide due to drowning, and that Delicia's death was self-induced, caused by smoke inhalation from the fire.
