Four people displaced after house fire in Bernardston

BERNARDSTON, MA (WSHM) -

The Bernardston Fire Department is investigating a possible chimney fire that resulted in four people displaced and a firefighter with a twisted ankle.

According to Bernardston Fire Chief Peter Shedd, the chimney fire happened at a two-family home at 64 South St. The home is owned by a firefighter who was renting the other side of the house out to two other tenants.

Shedd said fire crews from 11 different fire departments from as far away as Brattleboro and Deerfield were on the scene working to put the fire out.

According to Shedd, one of the firefighters somehow twisted his ankle while working to put out the fire.

Shedd said the house was likely at a total loss with most of the damage in the bedrooms.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation but it appeared the fire started in or near the chimney of a wood stove.

The Pioneer Valley chapter of the American Red Cross assisted the two families with clothes and food. They told the Red Cross they were going to stay with relatives.

Dawn Leaks, the regional director of communications for the Red Cross, said they were always looking for donations to help out families who are in need. She said no two situations were alike and different families have different needs. She suggested donating money to the Red Cross to allow them to purchase specific items.
