Ludlow signs surrounding communities agreement with MGM

LUDLOW, MA (WSHM) -

Ludlow is the first town to sign a surrounding community agreement with MGM.

Ludlow Town Select board member Aaron Saunders tells CBS 3 Springfield MGM will give the town of Ludlow $75,000 a year.

Some other highlights of the agreement include:

  • Up front payment of $50,000 for reimbursement of consulting and legal fees.
  • Guaranteed minimum annual payments.
  • MGM will pay for a "third party" to study the effects a casino would have on Ludlow if it's built in Springfield.
  • MGM will also pay for a "third party" to look at the impacts the casino has on Ludlow one and five years after it's built.

MGM wants to build an $800 million resort casino in Springfield's South End.

MGM is the only casino proposal left in Western Massachusetts after Palmer and West Springfield voters shot down proposals in their communities.

Several towns that surround Springfield have passed non-binding referendums against a Springfield casino.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will take the opinions of surrounding towns into account when deciding where a casino would go in Western Massachusetts.
