Construction workers in Greenfield found the body of a man floating in the Falls River Monday afternoon.
On Tuesday, Northern Construction Supervisor Mike Pelow said he was looking over a bridge on Route 2 about 1 p.m. talking to one of his workers. He said he noticed the man floating in the river and called police.
Workers said it appeared the man was spending some time in a small cave nearby but had not seen anyone there before.
Work stopped on the bridge last Wednesday due to weather and work was suspended for the holiday weekend.
It was unclear how the man died, but investigators said they were looking into the manner of death. The Northwest District Attorney's Office was handling the investigation and was not releasing much information.
Sources said the man appeared to be in his 50s and may have been homeless.
Construction workers said the area was popular with fisherman and that several school field trips had been in the area to study the rock outcroppings.
Authorities said they were working on contacting the man's family.
