AMHERST, MA (WSHM) -

Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Rick Sullivan was in Amherst Monday afternoon to announce the cities selected to participate in the 2013 Solarize Massachusetts Program.

The Western Mass towns include Amherst, Adams and Great Barrington.

Western Massachusetts is the No. 1 region in the state when it comes to solar energy.

There are 390 solar panels installed in the area.

"It has become very competitive, so communities that got selected today can also be very proud of the volunteer groups that have gotten together to bring this to the forefront to make the program available," said Sullivan.

In total, 15 cities and towns across Massachusetts were selected.
