LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The Clark County Fire Department treated several people at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino with flu-like symptoms Friday.

Several ambulances responded to the scene. The situation was reported shortly before 10 a.m. Friday.

Eighteen people were taken to hospitals, 13 of which were children between 7 and 9 years old. The remaining five were adults.

Each person hospitalized is with the Santa Monica Vikings, a traveling youth football team from Santa Monica, CA.

It was initially suspected that food poisoning was behind the illness, but that may not be the case.

FOX5 spoke with Vikings team manager Annalisa Johnson who said the people who became sick did not share a common meal. She additionally said about 40 people from her league were sickened, and roughly 40 people from other leagues became sick as well.

Public information officer for the Southern Nevada Health District Jorge Viote said they are conducting an investigation and will provide more details when the investigation is complete.

A spokesperson for the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino provided us with this statement:

"At approximately 10 a.m. the Clark County Fire Department responded to a call at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino to multiple guests with flu like symptoms. The Rio is working closely with the CCFD to determine the cause. More details will be released when available."

Friday night, the SNHD conducted interviews with parents and coaches and handed out a Norovirus fact sheet according to Jorge Viote. The fact she was handed out as a precaution in an attempt to help the virus from spreading.
