KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

A 2-year-old found wandering alone is now safe while police try and determine whether his parents should face criminal charges.

The toddler was found wandering through the woods alone in the middle of the night near South 53rd Street and Swartz Road in early Saturday morning.

Kansas City, KS, police said the child walked nearly half a mile in 40-degree temperatures wearing nothing.

"The child was walking in a wooded area crying. Of course that would raise suspicion to any adult that would see this child," Sgt. Emmett Lockridge said.

A woman driving by spotted the boy about 1 a.m.  She bundled him up and brought him to a nearby fire station at South 55th Street and Metropolitan Avenue.  Police picked him up from there and took him into protective custody.

They didn't hear from the child's mother until about 10:40 a.m.

"Called and said that her 2-year-old was missing, didn't know how the child got out or anything. We're looking into all of that, and we're going to determine if this is merely a bad mistake, or a bad mishap, or in fact if there is some criminal nature to it," Lockridge said.

It was all hard to believe for Ahlam Ababneh who lives nearby with three young children of her own.

"I'm not sure how you go until 10 a.m. without realizing your kid's missing," Ababneh said.

She said there are child locks and baby alarms all over her house, and she checks on her children at the slightest sound.  Ababneh said she is just relieved the story has a happy ending.

"I can't even imagine what he was going through, and I'm just glad he is OK and safe.  Things could have been worse," Ababneh said.

Police said the toddler will be in protective custody while they investigate whether his parents should face any charges for negligence.
