Mass. couple convicted of injuring infant

Posted: Updated:

LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) - A North Andover couple has been found guilty of abusing a weeks-old infant.

A Superior Court judge on Thursday found 34-year-old Steve Amos guilty of charges including multiple counts of assault and battery on a child and permitting injury to a child.

The Eagle-Tribune (http://bit.ly/1chcpIV ) reports that the baby's mother, 33-year-old Heather Dragotta, was convicted of permitting injury to a child.

Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 5.

The abuse occurred while the pair lived together in North Andover in 2010.

Doctors determined that the 5 ½-week-old child had 21 fractures and a brain hemorrhage consistent with violent shaking.

The couple claimed she suffered from a lack of copper and a vitamin D deficiency, known as infantile rickets, which led to the breaks.

The girl now lives with her biological father.
