SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

On Monday, the mayor of Springfield could receive a $40,000 a year pay raise, which would go into effective Jan. 1.

According to CBS 3 media partner Mass Live and The Republican, city council could give final approval when they meet Monday night.

The position of mayor has not seen a raise in 17 years, and officials said approximately 120 city and school employees earn more than the mayor of Springfield.

They gave first-step approval at its last regular meeting on Oct. 7.

The current mayor of Springfield, Domenic Sarno, earns $95,000 a year.

With the tentative pay increase, the number would jump to $135,000 a year.
