University of Massachusetts President Robert Caret responded to the controversy at Westfield State University Tuesday. Caret was at Springfield Technical Community College as part of a bus tour around the state.
The president of Westfield State University, Evan Dobelle, was under investigation for questionable spending and could be suspended by the college board of trustees.
When asked how the controversy affected public perception of colleges and universities, Caret said any negative press involving higher education was unfortunate and the investigation cast a shadow over all institutions.
Caret spelled out a number of measures taken by UMass to ensure there were checks and balances on all spending, including quarterly reviews and annual audits. He called the situation unfortunate and hoped the school could move forward.
