Mohegan Sun's $1 billion casino proposal now moves onto phase two after the state's gaming commission voted that they're financially stable.
"It is a marathon so I guess we crossed mile 10 today," said Mohegan Sun's Peter Schultz.
Thursday night was a milestone for Mohegan Sun and their supporters as the state's gaming commission voted unanimously to allow the company to move on in the gaming process.
"We have to really appreciate Chairman Crosby's comments about our impeccable financial position, that was excellent so we appreciate that," Schultz said.
Supporters rallied in Palmer and discussed the latest on Mohegan's traffic ideas.
"This is the increased capacity that the intersection will have if we do go with the on-grade, if MassDOT chooses that option," Schultz said.
But there are efforts to fight against the casino proposal in Palmer. Casino opponents have set up shop on Central Street.
"I think they'll find that it's a bad deal for Palmer," said casino opponent Charlotte Burns.
Burns has lived in Palmer for 25 years, she says a yes vote on Nov. 5 would be the end of Palmer as people know it.
"Many of us moved out here because it is a beautiful area, it's a quiet, peaceful little town and if we get a casino it's going to entirely change the town," Burns said.
Now both sides say they're picking up efforts in the final weeks before the vote.
"We started off as a little group and in just the past three weeks it's just skyrocketed," Burns said.
"We're looking at it to be a little bit of a dogfight and we're not taking anything for granted. We want to get the word out, get as many people out to vote yes as we can," said Robert Young, a casino supporter.
Opponents will rally Friday and Saturday against Mohegan Sun.
Meantime, supporters will be meeting with residents and going door to door.
