In the wake of the mass murder at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC, on Monday, Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee has not increased security.
Lt. Col. James Bishop said because of the $2.68 billion dollars worth of C-5 aircraft on base, security was already very tight. The base also houses 29 tenants, including 10 Army units, four Marine units and two Navy units
He said there were 5,500 people working on the base, which houses the 439TH Airlift Wing. Seven hundred forty of those personnel were civilians.
Bishop noted there were people assigned to provide security training on base, and the security staff was constantly taking part in various exercises to stay on top of the latest security threats.
Westover is the largest reserve base in the nation in terms of land, covering 2,511 acres.
