WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Emergency responders were in full force at the Eastern States Exposition for the first day Friday.

More than 100 seasonal police officers have been hired to work traffic control and security at the fairgrounds.

At least 20 firefighters are scheduled to be on duty at any one time, and medical personnel were on hand to treat any problems experienced by fairgoers. At least one doctor, two nurses and an ambulance driver were on hand every day.

First aid at the Big E was provided at no cost to patients. Most of the medical calls at the Big E tend to be related to dehydration and heat.

Police and fire services were being paid for by the Eastern States Exposition. In 2012, West Springfield was paid more than $600,000 for police and fire services.

The Big E runs every day through Sept. 29.
