Political action committees (PACs) and outside groups may have contributed heavily to Ed Markey's successful Senate campaign.
According to an Associated Press review of campaign finance records, a significant chunk of the Democrat's donations came from groups that could play a role in legislation before committees that Markey now serves on in the Senate.
Markey benefited from about $2 million in independent expenditures from labor, environmental and other groups.
Markey says the support from PACs and outside groups won't sway his votes and won't guarantee those groups have his ear.
Markey defeated his Republican challenger, Gabriel Gomez in June.
