A date was set for a special election in the Second Hampden and Hampshire State Senate on Thursday.
The election will fill the seat being vacated by State Sen. Michael Knapik. He resigned after 22 years on Beacon Hill to take a position at Westfield State University. He was one of only four Republicans in the Senate and the ranking Republican on the Senate Ways and Means Committee.
According to Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin's office, a primary was scheduled for Oct. 8 and the special election was scheduled for Nov. 5. The special election was scheduled to take place on the same day as several municipal elections in the district.
Prospective candidates must turn in 300 certified signatures along with their nominations to local registrars by Aug. 27 and to the secretary of the Commonwealth by Sept. 3.
So far Republican state Rep. Donald Humason, of Westfield, has announced he would run. Democratic Easthampton Mayor Michael Tautznik has also announced his intention to seek the seat. State Rep. Aaron Vega and former legislative aide Patrick Beaudry, both Democrats from Holyoke, have expressed interest in running.
