Groups seek to put minimum wage on Mass. ballot

Posted: Updated:

Supporters of a higher minimum wage for workers in Massachusetts hope to place the issue in front of voters next year.

The state's current minimum wage is $8 an hour and hasn't been increased since 2008.

A coalition of groups called Raise Up Massachusetts plans rallies at the Statehouse and other locations on Wednesday to discuss a proposed ballot question for November 2014 that would hike the minimum wage while also guaranteeing earned sick time for workers.

Senate President Therese Murray has signaled her desire to bring up a minimum wage bill in the current legislative session, though she has not yet backed any specific proposal.

Business groups that oppose a higher minimum wage say the higher costs could ultimately hurt workers by making Massachusetts less competitive.
