Mixed news on the job front in Western MA

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The June unemployment numbers are out in Massachusetts and the statewide seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate was 7.4 percent, up .7 percent from May.

In Hampden County officials said they've seen mixed news on the job front.

"We see employers have a demand, but yet they're not actually pulling the trigger to take those people to the labor force," said Kevin Lynn, the business services manager at FutureWorks Career Center.

More openings were posted by employers in the region in June than the same time last year with 12 percent more jobs. But that good news was accompanied by virtually no increase in career center members finding work. In June 2013, 266 people reported finding jobs as opposed to 265 in 2012.

"It's been slow and it's really been slow for several years now in terms of recovering from this recession," said Lynn. "I think logically projecting out it's going to be slow in the future, as well we are not going to see this great kind of roaring back."

The average wage of hire was also down 31 cents from the previous year. Job seekers like Elisa Rivera describe the market using just one word.

"Very tough, very very tough," said Rivera.

Rivera has been searching for employment for years. She's hoping some more education will help to boost her chances.

"I am trying to get into school through FutureWorks. I hear they have a program that will help people like me to pay for your school," said Rivera.

And others say they're going to have to look for work in other fields because of the lack of options in the industry they were trained for.

"Now I am looking for a position in a warehouse because I can't get no job in the career I went in for," said Neomer Toussaient.

The top industries in the region with job openings are healthcare, social assistance, administrative support and waste management.
