Phil prepares meals for hundreds of Wake Co. children

RALEIGH, N.C. -

It may be summer time, but the work doesn't stop for Wake County Schools, especially in the cafeteria. Cafeteria staff works year-round to provide meals for year-round students and for kids in summer camp.

To help workers, Phil Sanchez heads to the kitchen of Smith Magnet Elementary School to prepare and dish up meals to thousands of children.

To help Phil with the task is Dianne Elliott, an employee of Wake County Schools. She has been cooking and working for the school system for six years.

In an effort to help kids eat a healthier meal, Phil helps Elliott with prepare pounds of carrots and broccoli. Phil helps make a glaze for the vegetables, pours it on top, and then the vegetables are ready to be steamed.

But it's not just about cooking meals for students in schools; it's also about making sure kids at summer camp are being fed as well.

Wake County workers send out hundreds of bagged meals to kids at camps across the county.

Thousands of motorists pass stopped school buses every day, and many of them may not even realize they are breaking the law. It's an issue that has received intense attention in North Carolina, with 13 children being hit, and killed, at bus stops since 1999. One survey on March 26 of this year recorded 429 times where a driver roared past a stopped school bus in Wake County alone. In Durham County, there were 89 violations that same day and Cumberland County had a whopping 210. Johnston Coun...More >>
