Holyoke holds citywide clean up

HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

People took to the streets to help clean up the city on Saturday, part of Mayor Alex Morse's annual citywide clean up.

Groups took part throughout Holyoke, including one made up of various law enforcement groups on South Canal Street.

The volunteers swept away dirt and filled dozens of garbage bags with debris.

Eddie Caisse of the Hampden County Sheriff's Department told CBS 3 that over the last few years, he can tell that people take pride in a cleaner city.

"What we have noticed is that people are keeping them [the parks] cleaner," said Caisse. "If you can keep a blighted neighborhood clean and people see that residents are invested in cleaning it up, it encourages less gang activity, less drug activity, less criminal activity and more positive things in terms of making it easy for us to build a community."

Caisse plans on holding a summer basketball league on the courts they cleaned up on Saturday.

Once the clean up was complete, volunteers from across the city made their way to Heritage Park for pizza to celebrate.
