East Longmeadow police are searching for the person who shot at an elderly woman's house late Wednesday night.
It happened in a quiet neighborhood on Schuyler Drive.
An elderly woman woke up Thursday morning to find her front door shattered. At first, she thought it was from Wednesday night's intense storms.
Now, neighbors in the quiet community are keeping a close eye.
"My jaw dropped," said Eva Stockhamer, who lives down the street.
According to neighbors like Stockhamer, the quiet neighborhood doesn't see much action.
"It's very unusual to see a car you don't recognize," she said.
But sometime between 9:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Wednesday, someone fired a bullet through an elderly woman's front door.
"A shell casing from a .40-caliber Smith and Wesson was located in the street across from her residence," said Sgt. Richard Bates, of the East Longmeadow Police Department.
Bates says the detective unit was called in to investigate, and they are following leads.
"We believe that it's probably just a random shooting ... or possibly a mistaken address, they were looking for somebody else in the area. It's hard to determine at this particular point," Bates said.
The woman declined to comment on camera.
Police photos show the bullet hole where a .40-caliber round was lodged in her front door.
Neighbors in the area told CBS 3 they didn't hear anything Wednesday night because of the storm.
Police are asking residents not to worry, but to report anything out of the ordinary.
"This rarely happens in our time, so I don't think people need to get upset about it. But just stay vigilant and let us know if they see something unusual," Bates said.
But people in the quiet neighborhood will watch their kids a little closer and remain alert.
"I would be concerned just for him to walk to and from the house late at night," Stockhamer said.
East Longmeadow police have sent out the evidence for evaluation.
They say this is the first call they've had of shots fired in several years.
