Fallen Western MA officers honored

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Members of the law enforcement community joined together Wednesday morning for the 25th annual Western Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association Memorial Day service.

Four new names were added to the police monument at Springfield Technical Community College, including officers Kevin Ambrose and Jose Torres, who were killed on the job this past year.

"We miss him dearly we think of him every day and today we get another opportunity to honor him and his family," said Westfield Police Chief John Camerota.

"We can't bring Kevin Ambrose back but it is important to remember him, it's important to honor his family over the tragic loss, and to always let them know that he will be remembered," said Springfield Police Commissioner William Fitchet.

Also added to the memorial were two Holyoke officers, James Reynolds who was killed back in 1951 and David Zolendziwski who was killed back in 2010.

"It's definitely meaningful," said Officer Zolendziwski's son, Craig Zolendziwski.

The four officers' names now are engraved permanently alongside the dozens of others who have fallen in the line of duty.

"It's very wrenching for the officers to see his name," said Fitchet. "That's not just a name on a monument, there was flesh and blood and a real man and a real heroic man that name represents."

And as members of the community stopped to remember those that have been lost, Fitchet asked everyone to also keep in mind all of those who still serve.

"So I ask all of us that when late at night in those uncertain hours when you hear the distinct wail of a police siren, we all say a prayer," said Fitchet.

Wednesday afternoon the Springfield Police Department held its own memorial service at the city's police headquarters to honor all of their fallen officers.

On the one-year anniversary of Ambrose's death, the department is also planning on holding a vigil at that memorial.
