A statue of the Virgin Mary returned to a traffic island in West Springfield on Sunday morning.
Antonio Liquori's Pizzeria adopted the island as part of a beautification project and put the statue there.
The city's Department of Public Works said laws prohibited religious artifacts from being displayed on city property, so they had it removed.
After Mayor Gregory Neffinger learned about a petition to keep the statue on the island, he had it put back until the city's lawyer is done looking at the issue.
