No cell phone ban disconnects patrons at Masters Tournament

Posted: Updated:

When you step inside the Augusta National Golf Club, you're kind of stepping back in time, to a land where no cell phones are allowed.

"I don't see the reason for not having cell phones," said Spencer Jackson, he was having trouble getting in contact with his friends because he couldn't use his cell phone.

"I always have it attached to my hip, so not having it around me is very odd," said Chris Bessette.

Cell phones, PDAs and beepers are forbidden on the course; the screeching ring tones could be a distraction for the golfers. While some call it an unnecessary and outdated rule, others appreciate the tranquility out on the green.

"It's been nice because it's been quite," said Maddison Starkey.

"I don't have problem," said Desiree Herring. She walked outside the gates to use her cell phone. "That's the problem, I think, people just use them too much."

But all that peace and quiet comes at a price. The incessant tweeters and Facebook addicts are sacrificing social networking. Some itching to check-in at the world famous golf club have to do it on the other side of the green gates.

"I have to get a ticket and go in so that I can say I'm actually here!" said Ashley Reagin, who started waiting outside the gates at 10 a.m. for someone to pass on their badge.

No Facebook, no tweeting, no taking pictures! Unless you have a digital camera; a blast from the past for the armature photographer, but the only alternative to snap a shot of your favorite player.

"It takes better pictures. I can zoom better," said Anna Lee Starkey, who said she misses not being able to upload her pictures to Twitter and Instagram as soon as she snaps a picture.

For those who find it a little challenging being disconnected from the world in a sense. Phone banks like this are located around the course.  You can make local or long distance calls free of charge.
